The DeYoung Red Diamond is one of the largest known natural fancy dark red diamonds. The diamond was acquired by S. Sydney DeYoung, a Boston jeweler, as part of a collection of estate jewelry. The gemstone was set in a hat pin and was wrongly identified as a garnet! Sidney DeYoung donated the rare 5.03 carat red diamond to the Smithsonian Institution in 1987, to be added to the National Gem and Mineral Collection where it is still on display.

The diamond is more than just aesthetically beautiful, it is an Enduring Symbol of Love, Romance, and Commitment. Diamond’s name is derived from the Greek word adamas, which translates to unconquerable. This symbolic meaning lends itself well to its historic tribute of eternal love.

Did You Know? Ancient civilizations believed that the world was set upon an enormous sapphire, which painted the sky blue with its reflection. And it is no wonder, for Sapphire comes not in one but in all the blue shades of the firmament, from the striking deep blue of the evening sky to the shining mid-blue of a lovely summer's day.

Sapphire, the birthstone for September, has long symbolized truth, sincerity, and faithfulness. Tradition holds that Moses was given the Ten Commandments on tablets of sapphire, making it the most sacred of gemstones. Because sapphires represent divine favor, they were the gemstone of choice for kings and high priests.

Did You Know? The history of the engagement ring began in 1215, when Pope Innocent III, one of the most powerful popes of the Middle Ages, declared a waiting period between a betrothal and the marriage ceremony. The rings were used to signify the couple’s commitment in the interim. It was around this same time that rings were introduced as a major component of the wedding ceremony. These early rings, often formed from twisted copper or braided hair, as only the elite were permitted to wear ornate rings or rings with jewels.

The Cullinan 1, also known as the Star of Africa, is a pear shaped diamond weighing 530.20 carats. It is the largest of nine stones cut from the Cullinan Diamond. It is the largest polished white diamond in the world, and was the largest polished diamond of any color until the 1985 discovery of the Golden Jubilee Diamond. The diamond is set in the head of the Royal Scepter and may be removed to wear as a pendant by itself or combine with the Cullinan II from the Royal Crown to be worn as a broach. It is on display with the other Crown Jewels in the Tower of London.
